Active Lives Children & Young People Survey – LGA response

“Councils stand ready to support their communities to be active and stay healthy.

Responding to the latest official statistics published in Sport England’s Active Lives Children & Young People Survey, which shows the highest number of active children and young people since the survey started in 2017/18, Cllr Julie Jones-Evans, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Committee, said:

“Councils stand ready to support their communities to be active and stay healthy.

“While it is positive that this report shows the highest number of active children and young people since the survey began, inactivity levels remain worryingly high.

“It is vital the Government’s forthcoming physical activity strategy directly addresses this and sets out measures to significantly boost levels of activity.

“Government should also invest the £400 million announced in the Spending Review for grassroots sports facilities through councils, who are best placed to ensure funding is directed towards leisure centres, swimming pools and pitches and playing fields.”
