Local Government Associations from Across the UK Reaffirm Commitment to Protecting Democratic Participation

Today, the Home Affairs Committee have released their report into funding for tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG), which the LGA gave evidence to. Cllr Heather Kidd, Chair of the LGA's SSCB, said “Councils are deeply committed to tackling violence against women and girls, domestic abuse and sexual violence."

“Councils are determined to tackle violence against women and girls and, alongside key partners, play a key role in providing the essential services that individuals affected by this issue rely on for support."

“Any instance of violence against women and girls is shocking, saddening, and unacceptable. It is good that the majority of commitments made in the previous government’s VAWG Strategy and Domestic Abuse Plan have been met, but there is still much progress needed in tackling the issue."

“The LGA is working with councils to advise government how to achieve its stated aim of tackling anti-social behaviour."

“It is with relief that we have not so far seen a repeat of the extremist far-right violence, racism and thuggish behaviour that has brought fear and distress to so many people and blighted communities up and down the country.
