“A year on, the volume of vapes in our bins has dropped, but industry has moved faster than regulation – the products causing fires in our bin lorries today are effectively the same disposables in a different shell.

Analysis of the latest fly-tipping data shows that the average court fine for fly-tipping is £539, which is £87 lower than the £626 average fixed penalty notice (FPN) councils can issue for the same offence.

We support the Government’s ambition to back local and community energy and give people a real stake in the clean energy transition. Investment that helps communities co-own generation, cut bills and reinvest returns locally is a positive step.

The LGA led calls for a ban on disposable vapes two years ago due to environmental and health concerns.

“Councils are ready to go further and faster on climate action – but we need a plan that works in partnership with local government. However, the funding or policies needed to empower them to help fully realise this ambition are not yet in place." 

Councils are urging the Government to ensure that reforms focus on reducing unnecessary waste created in the first place and increasing the recyclability of packaging.

Extreme weather preparation is a key priority for councils, who develop comprehensive plans to cope with any bad weather, to protect residents and businesses, and to recover as quickly as possible.
