LGA response to Deputy Prime Minister announcement on virtual attendance of council meetings, privacy of councillor addresses and standards for councillors

Speaking today at the LGA’s conference in Harrogate, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, announced that the Government will consult on changes to the councillor standards system, remove the requirement for councillors’ home addresses to be published and allow councils to use virtual attendance at council meetings.

More than a fifth of councillors have received death threats or threats of violence, as half say abuse has got worse in past year – LGA Survey

A new survey by the Local Government Association (LGA) has found that over a fifth of councillors have received a death threat or a threat of violence (22 per cent) due to their role*, whilst 23 per cent of councillors have suffered abuse serious enough to report to the police. The survey is part of the LGA’s Debate Not Hate Campaign. Around half of respondents (49 per cent) said they felt the abuse had got worse over the past 12 months, and 73 per cent of councillors experienced abuse or intimidation in their role in the past year.
