Active Together sits on the Leicestershire Learning Disability Partnership Board, and in collaboration with its members, plus residents with learning disabilities, co-designed our first ’Easy Read’ Guide.
About the guide
The guide features six main pages covering topics such as the benefits of moving more, how much we should move, and ideas for getting more active based on what you enjoy. The guide includes links and QR codes to further support and information. All information is presented in an accessible, ‘easy read’ style, making it a valuable resource for all residents, not just those with a learning disability. The guide is now being utilised as part of learning disability checks within clinical practices. Carers have also found the resource valuable due to it’s ability to facilitate positive conversations around movement.
The challenge
Developing a resource for people with learning disabilities that was genuinely accessible, and conveyed the key messages around physical activity.
The solution
Co-designing the resource using our position on the Learning Disability Partnership and lived experience of residents.
The impact
Over 2,000 copies of the resources distributed to residents, patients, and organisations (such as GP practices, Voluntary, Community, Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations, clubs, charities, carers, Social Prescribers).
How is the new approach being sustained?
We have a hard copy resource that has been printed in bulk (1000 copies) so is readily available to be distributed out where there is a demand. We also have a PDF version online for ease of access. Our online version has been embedded onto partner organisation websites, and sent direct to patients within primary care.
Lessons learned
The power of co-designing a resource, not only to empower those involved in the creation but to produce an authentically accessible resource. We learnt that in making all of our resources accessible in this way, they will be easily accessible to all our residents across LLR, not just those with a learning disability.
