Refugees and asylum seekers: resources and support

Councils play a key role in supporting asylum seekers, resettlement and unaccompanied children.

The role of the LGA

Councils continue to work hard to support and deliver the many programmes for refugees and asylum seekers currently in operation. The LGA supports engagement with central government in order to find sustainable solutions that minimise any pressures on local authorities, their communities and new arrivals.

Political representatives from English regions and Devolved Administrations in the LGA Asylum, Refugee and Migration Task Group focus on key issues in asylum and resettlement at a national and strategic level.

The  Asylum and Resettlement Council Senior Engagement Group (ARCSEG) is administered by the LGA, the Home Office and MHCLG and attended by Chief Executives representing each region and nation. Meeting quarterly since 2019, it aims to achieve better engagement and oversight; access to funding and data; and a place based and more equitable approach to asylum dispersal and resettlement.

Strategic Migration Partnerships

The Home Office also engages local government at a devolved administration and regional level. Queries on this and asylum and resettlement more widely can also be raised with Strategic Migration Partnerships.
