Across the country, councils and combined authorities are taking urgent actions in their local areas to reduce their carbon emissions to net zero or carbon neutral by 2050. Sustainability permeates all areas of council work including but not limited to transport, energy, housing, procurement, commercialisation, and economic growth.

There needs to be a continued conversation around how councils and combined authorities can adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change and have access to the most recent and reliable research available.

The LGA sustainability sector improvement programme exists to help councils and combined authorities to reach their local carbon reduction and adaptation targets. The LGA Sustainability Action Network (SAN) forms part of this support to local authorities across the country.

The SAN is a network designed to support officers working in sustainability related roles within local government. Members discuss emerging issues and trends affecting councils and combined authorities, and hear from each other and guests on new policies, programmes, and practices.

Crucial to the group is having the space to share support, opportunities, and notable practice. The composition of SAN is representative of councils and combined authorities across England and is led by councils and combined authorities, for councils and combined authorities.
