Understanding and managing equality in pay and terms and conditions

Information and resources to support councils to achieve equality in pay and terms and conditions for their workforce.

Equal pay refers to the legal requirement for employers to pay employees equally for doing work of equal value, regardless of gender or other protected characteristics.

This duty is covered under the Equality Act 2010 in the UK and aims to eliminate unfair disparities in pay and terms and conditions.

Ensuring equal pay means regularly reviewing:

  • recruitment processes
  • job roles
  • pay structures
  • line management competencies
  • employment practices to maintain fairness and prevent discrimination.

Having equality and fairness embedded in your policies and practices is the first step in managing an Equal Pay risk.
