A member development session for newly elected councillors in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber to help attendees hit the ground running. The event has been designed to be different from, but complement, the induction councillors will receive in their host authority. The activity is part of the LGA’s Sector Support Improvement programme which has been funded by UK Government.

These events are run by experience councillors and will be a combination of conversations, presentations, and networking to enable attendees to explore their role and gain a wider perspective on the realities of being a councillor. There will be a strong regional dynamic, with the opportunity meet other newly elected members from across the region, and hear about how national policy issues impact locally. Attendees will hear from experienced local councillors on their top tips and the support available from the Local Government Association to help equip new councillors to hit the ground running.

This session is open to all councillors in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber but will be most relevant to those who have been elected for the first time in May 2026, or at a recent by election.

The event is free of charge and light refreshments will be provided. If you would like to attend, please book by email [email protected].

Six months in: A session for newly elected councillors (WM)

Wednesday 21st October 2026

Join fellow councillors elected in May 2026 for an in-person session designed to help you reflect on your early experiences in the role and connect with experienced LGA member peers. This is a valuable opportunity to share insights from your first six months in office, discuss priorities or challenges, and learn from others across the region. The session will also look ahead to key issues shaping local government—exploring upcoming challenges, regional priorities, and what to expect over the coming year and beyond.

Through peer discussion and shared learning, you’ll gain fresh perspectives on your role, hear about emerging topics in the sector, and discover the range of support, development opportunities, and resources available through the Local Government Association (LGA).

This event will be taking place in central Birmingham. Venue to be announced shortly.
