There are many different reasons why apprentices decide to take part in the Local Government Apprentice of the Year event, including networking and career development. But for one of this year’s runners up, Jessica-Marie Brooman, it was all about learning new skills and testing existing ones.
Jessica is currently undertaking a level 3 Leadership and Management apprenticeship at Isle of Wight Council, with a career in Local Government spanning nearly 9 years. When the opportunity to take part in the event this year arose, Jessica decided to take part as she hoped that it would test her communication skills and give her the opportunity to see how she would perform in a scenario where you have to participate without knowing the details of what you will be expected to do in advance.
I thought the event was a great test of vital skills that all council employees should have, no matter what their role is”
Jessica recalled that by the end of the event; despite feeling tired after a jam packed day, she also felt a huge boost. As a result of the varied activities and format of the event, she
was able to achieve what she had hoped that she would. According to Jessica, thanks to the group activities, she was able to draw upon and test her existing skills in communication and organisational abilities, by helping her team collate their ideas. She was also able to develop new skills, such as using the Zoom whiteboard tool to pull together information.
Although I was very nervous for the event it has given me a great boost, and I feel more confident to put myself forward for upcoming events”
Jessica felt the day provided great opportunities for networking and collaboration and described how attending the event meant she had the opportunity to speak with Local Government colleagues she would otherwise never have meet. When asked what advice she has for anyone considering taking part in 2026, Jessica said:
Be confident in your abilities, don’t be afraid to speak up and get involved and most importantly have fun!"
