Over the last year, as the legislative agenda has been focused on delivering Britain’s exit from the EU for the UK, we have had to take a different approach to our campaigning on behalf of our councils.
This paper is the very start of our campaign ahead of the Spending Review. We have published a series of papers, commissioned by LGA boards, which start the new thinking around building the case for long term, sustained investment in local government as well as laying out the positive outcomes this would deliver for the country.
The Jo Cox Commission report makes recommendations for local action, and indicates that local leaders in councils, the wider public sector and business have a critical role in tackling loneliness.
Councils must develop a different and closer relationship with their communities as the delivery of public services moves towards collaboration, empowerment and prevention.

Councillors and officers are indispensable to one another and mutual respect and communication between both is essential for good local government. Together, they bring the critical skills, experience and knowledge required to manage an effective council.

Councils only want the best for the children and young people in their communities, but many children struggle to cope with the challenges they experience. Facing continuous family
violence and without recourse to adequate help when they need it, we know that some young people go on to be involved in the youth justice system.
