Cllr Louise Gittins, Chair of the Local Government Association, which represents councils across England, said:

"The UK is one of the most fiscally centralised countries in the developed world so plans towards greater fiscal devolution are encouraging.

"Councils are committed to working with the Government, alongside mayoral combined authorities, on the detail to ensure genuine devolution gives local areas the fiscal powers, tools, and capacity to shape their own futures, as part of a roadmap to a sustainable financial model for local government.

“This should include the ability to raise and retain resources locally, define local priorities, and lead integrated public services in ways that reflect local needs."
