Councils are doing all they can to ensure they meet their duties under the Care Act - including cutting spending on other neighbourhood services - but many still fear they will not be able to over the coming years.

Following the local elections held on Thursday 2 May 2024, the LGA’s political proportionality has now been calculated and independently verified. The results are as follows:Labour - 38.8% Conservative - 31.4% Liberal Democrat - 15.5% Independent/Green Party/Other - 14.3% Total - 100% Labour remains the largest group at the LGA. This means that Labour will retain the chair of the LGA and will be nominating Cllr Shaun Davies to remain as LGA Chair.  ENDS

The LGA has joined forces with the Electoral Commission and the Jo Cox Foundation to call for no abuse towards candidates at this set of local elections.

The LGA is aiming to provide councils with support to harness opportunities, drive improvement across all regions and deliver critical services to communities.

These stark results are very worrying for councils, care providers and most importantly people who draw on care and support
