United Pride Friends is a group service for members of the LGBTQ+ community with Autism and Learning difficulties. The primary purpose of their group is giving members a safe place to meet new people and make friends. Funded through Oxfordshire County Council via direct payments, this bespoke, family-run provision is for a young man who was neglected, restrained, over medicated, and abused as an inpatient in various assessment and treatment units (ATUs). Care technology when considered as part of a holistic support offer means it can be used effectively to support people’s independence and positively impact on their lives.
The North East saw a common challenge across their staff and working together with the TSA have been able to implement a regional wide approach to upskilling staff in digital and technology skills. This upskilling of staff has resulted in increased confidence as reported by staff and an increase in care technology referrals.
Wigan Council has been working to take a whole system approach to digital and ensure that it is embedded within their adult social care service. Digital has been a key part of the local authority’s transformational response to the challenge of austerity and demographic change underpinned by the Wigan Deal. Technology has been used to maximise peoples independence and resilience at home, improving outcomes simultaneous to reducing dependency on traditional models of support, aligned with the principle of better lives, less cost.
This case study is part of the publication, "Care and Health Career Academies: What good looks like". Care and health career academies are relatively new initiatives, and the national picture is constantly evolving. This project was undertaken to develop a better understanding of care and health career academies in England. It aims to share emerging learning on the development of academies and insights as to what good looks like.
