Councils across England could unleash £276 billion of untapped economic potential – equivalent to more than a 10th of national output – with government support to break down place-specific barriers to growth, according to new analysis released today.

Today, the Government has announced a raft of measures to boost social housing. Responding, Cllr Adam Hug, Housing spokesperson for the LGA, said: “This is a meaningful step towards addressing the housing crisis we face and helping to deliver the social and affordable homes needed."

Key priorities for government action include ensuring effective integration across NHS and local government; strengthening public health leadership; and eliminating service duplication and cost-shunting

A new survey by the LGA has found that 52 per cent of councillors have experienced misinformation about them published, with 7 in 10 saying they had experienced abuse in the last year.

“Councils across the country use various governance systems, with some favouring the committee system and others preferring executive systems. Therefore, there will be mixed views held across our membership."

“Councils have a critical and unique role in delivering local inclusive growth across all sectors and communities, working closely with businesses, supporting jobseekers, planning regeneration and improving infrastructure."

“This long-term strategy will provide much needed certainty for local government, industry and businesses to plan ahead on vital infrastructure over the next decade.

"Individual councils will need to know the implications and a transitional mechanism is crucial to avoid putting services at risk"
